Shop Local
Instead of shopping at big-box stores, considering shopping local and supporting a local business owner. If you keep your money where your heart lives you support our local economy, friends and neighbours, and help us remain strong.
Why shopping local matters
COVID-19 has had a major impact on local businesses. The shop local movement actually began before the pandemic. We are requesting that you shop local whenever possible. If we don't support local businesses in our community, we may see some of our favourite establishments close.
Small businesses are essential to the local economy. They are especially welcome in rural areas like Trent Lakes, where large box store developments and malls are not available.
- By shopping local you support your community. It has been estimated that for every $100 you spend, on average our area gets $68 in economic return through payroll, taxes, and other expenditures. Even if you were to decide to make 10% of your purchases locally, it enhances the community. The more local support and success a business can experience, the more likely other businesses will be attracted to the area creating a diversity of products, services and resources.
- Shopping local doesn't just keep money in our community, it creates local jobs. Working locally can generate a more content workforce by allowing them to interact with their neighbours, and provide a sense of contributing directly to their own community. More workers able to find satisfying local employment means more community and better customer service.
- Economic investment, jobs and a thriving small business community are all signs of a desirable place to live. Real estate values are boosted or can be sustained when you live in a area with a good quality of life.
