Be safe, be seen

The Municipality of Trent Lakes has an abundance of Crown Land and forests for outdoor enthusiasts. Hunters also enjoy their time in the forest, particularly during hunting seasons. Hunting can take place on Crown Land, as well as on private land, with the permission of the property owner. People planning to hike, ride, jog or bird watch in forested areas should take the following precautions to enjoy a safe experience.

Hunting is a safe recreational activity in Ontario and non-hunters should feel comfortable using the woods at any time of the year. The following are some Be Safe, Be Seen precautions for non-hunters during hunting seasons.

  • Be aware that hunting is taking place. Know the seasons, dates, and locations.
  • Avoid dawn and dusk and any time visibility is limited.
  • Wear hunter orange (hat, vest, scarf, etc.) and avoid beige, brown, and green clothing.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Stick to established trails. Hunters typically know where the trails are.
  • Hike in a group or with a buddy - hunters will hear you coming. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Hunting season information is posted on the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry website

The hunting seasons for each wildlife category are different and vary by Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). Trent Lakes is located in WMU 60. More information can be found in the Hunting Regulations Summary

Hunting for migratory birds is regulated at the federal level and more information is posted on the Government of Canada website
