Voter Information

The Municipality of Trent Lakes holds an election every four years. Find out if you're eligible to vote below, meet the candidates, learn more about third party advertisers, and read the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Voters' Guide

Voter eligibility

You can vote in a municipal election if you meet the following requirements: 

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years old
  • A resident in the Municipality of Trent Lakes 
  • A non-resident of the Municipality of Trent Lakes, but you or your spouse own or rent property in the Municipality
  • Are not prohibited from voting under any law

You may only vote once in the election regardless of how many properties you own or rent within the Municipality. If you live in the Municipality and own or rent more than one property, you must vote in the ward where you live. You may also vote in multiple Municipal Elections if you own property outside of the Municipality of Trent Lakes. You may only vote once for school board purposes in the municipality that you live in. 

Trailer owners in campgrounds are tenants of the campground and may be eligible to vote in the Municipal Election. You are an eligible elector as a person who owns a trailer in a campground if you are either: 

  • Entitled to use the land on Voting Day; or
  • Entitled to use the land for a period of six weeks or more during the calendar year in which the election is held

  • All Candidates Meeting hosted by Cavendish Community Ratepayers Association Inc. (CCRAI)

    Date and Time: Saturday, September 17, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 

    Location: Cavendish Community Centre, 18 Community Complex Drive, Trent Lakes

  • Municipal Election Debate hosted by Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce

    Date and Time: Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

  • All Candidates Meeting hosted by the Buckhorn Ratepayers Association

    Date and Time: Monday, October 3, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. 

    Location: Buckhorn Community Centre, 1782 Lakehurst Road, Buckhorn

  • All Candidates Meeting hosted by the Crystal Lake Community Association 

    Date and Time: Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.

    Location: Galway Hall, 388 Galway Road, Trent Lakes 

How to vote

If you are on the Voters' List, you will receive a Voter Information Letter in the mail (late September or early October). This letter contains the information you need to vote. Make sure to hold on to the Voting Information Letter in a safe place until voting opens on October 11 at 10:00 a.m.

You will have until October 24 to vote, but do not wait until the last minute in case you have difficulty logging into the voting system. Open your Voting Information Letter and find your personal PIN that will grant you access to the voting system. You can also vote by paper ballot on October 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Municipal Office.

 Follow these steps to vote online:

  1. Visit the voting website provided in your Voter Information Letter by entering the address into the address bar at the top of your internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  2. Enter your personal PIN and Date of Birth
  3. Follow the prompts to vote for each applicable position
  4. Once you confirm your choices, your ballot has been cast and cannot be changed
  5. Write down the receipt code provided (it cannot be reproduced)
  6. After the election, visit the website again and enter your receipt code to confirm that your ballot was cast (will not show who you voted for)

What if I can't log in?

If you receive an error after several attempts to log in, this may be because your birth date information is incorrect in our Voting System. You will need a new PIN. Please contact the Corporate Services Department by email or phone at 705-738-3800 ext. 245.

Voting Hours 

You can vote online anytime from:

  • Tuesday, October 11 at 10:00 a.m. to Monday, October 24 at 8:00 p.m.

 Follow these steps to vote by phone:

  1. Call the number provided in your Voter Information Letter
  2. Enter your personal PIN and Date of Birth and press ‘#'
  3. Follow the prompts to vote for each applicable position using the buttons on your phone
  4. Once you confirm your choices, your ballot has been cast and cannot be changed
  5. Write down the receipt code that is provided (it cannot be reproduced)
  6. After the election, visit the website again and enter the receipt code to confirm that your ballot was cast (will not show who you voted for)

What if I receive an error?

Paper Ballots

Paper ballots will be available for voting in the 2022 Municipal Election on Voting Day only. If you would like to cast your vote using a paper ballot, you can visit the following location on October 24:

Please bring valid proof of identity and residence to vote.

In person voting with paper ballots is open during the following hours:

  • Monday, October 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

If, during the voting period, you do not have access to a touchtone telephone or internet at your home, please visit the following location to use the touch-screen voting kiosks:

In person voting with the touch-screen kiosks is open during the following hours:

  • Tuesday, October 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 12 to Friday, October 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Monday, October 17 to Friday, October 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Monday, October 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Campaign Contributions

Any individual who is normally a resident in Ontario is able to make a contribution to a candidate's campaign or to a third party advertiser. Contributions are any money, goods, or services that are given to a candidate for their campaign or to a third party advertiser.

The maximum allowable donation to any one candidate or third party advertiser is $1,200.00. Any donation above $25.00 must not be made in cash. The name and address of every contributor who makes a donation above $100.00 must be recorded on the Candidate's or third party advertisers Financial Statement. These Financial Statements will be made public on the Municipality's website following the election. 

Contributors are not allowed to make contributions exceeding a total of $5000.00 to two or more candidates for office on the same Council, the local school board, or third party advertisers.
