Waste Diversion Programs

There are many Waste Diversion Programs available at our Transfer Stations to help decrease the amount of waste goes in a landfill. Review all of the waste diversion programs that are offered. 

Lumber Reuse Program

You can now bring your unused or unwanted lumber to our Transfer Station Sites.

In an effort to promote sustainibility and reduce waste you can drop off your unused or unwanted lumber at any of our Transfer Station Sites for reuse. Please read the criteria for accepted lumber in our re-use program and be sure to ask about available lumber for rehoming!

Brush, Leaf, and Yard Waste

Brush, leaf and yard waste is accepted at all Transfer Station Sites at no charge. Branches can have a maximum diameter of 6 inches. Any yard waste with a dimater greater than 6 inches will not be accepted.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

HHW is accepted seasonally at the Buckhorn Transfer Station only starting June 2nd. 

We can only accept household hazardous material in containers up to 20 litres (5 gallons).

Household Hazardous Waste is accepted year-round at the Peterborough County/City's Household Hazardous Waste Depot located in Peterborough. 

The following hazardous waste is accepted:

  • Aerosols
  • Antifreeze
  • Automotive fluids
  • Batteries (all kinds)
  • Cleaners (all kinds)
  • Cosmetics/make-up
  • Fertilizers
  • Fluorescent light bulbs/tubes
  • Gasoline
  • Glues
  • Herbicides
  • Ink cartridges
  • Mercury containing devices
  • Motor oil
  • Paint
  • Pesticides
  • Pet care products
  • Pool chemical
  • Propane cylinders (100 lbs/50 kg max)
  • Sealants and stains

We don't accept the following types of hazardous waste:

  • Explosive (including firecrackers and ammunition)
  • Bio-medical waste
  • Commercial hazardous waste
  • Pharmaceuticals (see "Needles and Medications" below)
  • Needles (see "Needles and Medications" below)

Medications and Sharps

Please bring all these items to a pharmacy for free safe disposal. Visit the Health Products Stewardship Association for more information on this program.

We don't accept sharps, such as:

  • Needles
  • Syringes
  • Lancets

We also do not accept medications such as:

  • Prescriptions
  • Over-the-counter medication
  • Vitamins
  • Supplements

Household Batteries

Household batteries are accepted at all Transfer Stations. You can view the list of accepted household batteries. Your batteries may require terminal protection before disposal. Please view the Terminal Protection Guidelines before you dispose of your batteries.

Printer Cartridges

Printer cartridges are accepted at all Transfer Stations.

Car Batteries

Car batteries are accepted at the Bobcaygeon, Cavendish, and Crystal Lake Transfer Station Sites. You can dispose of your car batteries year-round. Car batteries are accepted at the Buckhorn Transfer Station during Household Hazardous Waste hours only.

Fluorescent Tubes

Fluorescent tubes are accepted at the Bobcaygeon, Cavendish, and Crystal Lake Transfer Station Sites. You can dispose of your fluorescent tubes year-round.

Fluorescent tubes are accepted at the Buckhorn Transfer Station during Household Hazardous Waste hours only.

Empty automotive plastics and antifreeze containers

Empty automotive plastics and antifreeze containers are accepted at all Transfer Station Sites. You can view the list of accepted automotive containers.

Tires

Tires are accepted at all Transfer Station Sites. Only four tires are permitted per load. Bicycle tires and anything smaller than a bicycle tire will not be accepted.

Scrap Metal

Scrap metal is accepted at all Transfer Station Sites. If the item is at least 50% scrap metal, it can be recycled as scrap metal.

Appliances

Appliances are accepted at all Transfer Station Sites. Products that contain Freon will be subject to a $20 charge. Products containing Freon include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioner units, dehumidifiers and water coolers. You must remove all doors on refrigerators and freezers before disposal.

Electronics

Electronics can be recycled at all Transfer Station Sites at no charge. Our electronics recycling program accepts all electronic and electrical items. From floor model televisions to cell phones to coffee makers.

Items that cannot be accepted in the electronics recycling program include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Fridges/freezers
  • Water coolers
  • Gas powered devices

Organics

Organics material is accepted at the Buckhorn Transfer Station only. Only food items can be composted in our organics system. You can view the list of items that are accepted in the organics program

Please wrap organics in paper bags or newspaper. You can also leave them loose and place your organics material directly into the Moloks. You can purchase kitchen catchers at the Municipal Office for $5.00.

Backyard Composting

Composting in your back yard is the easiest and most cost-effective way to reduce waste from your house. The Municipality sells composters and digesters for a fee:

  • Composters cost $30.00
  • Digesters cost $60.00

We encourage grasscycling and mulching as an excellent way to reduce backyard waste and improve lawn health.

  • Grasscycling is allowing the grass clippings to stay on the lawn to compost
    • Cut no more than 1/3 the length of the grass
    • Cut only when the grass is dry to the touch
    • A mulching mower is not needed

Textiles

Textile recycling is available at all Transfer Stations. View a list of accepted items for textile recycling.

Reuse Centre

The Reuse Centres will be open starting April 15, 2024.

The Reuse Centre is a great option to donate your unused or unwanted items for someone else to enjoy. Items must be clean and in good reusable condition.

The Reuse Centre is open from early spring to late fall.

We accept the following items at the Reuse Centre:

  • Small furniture (tables, chairs)
  • Sporting goods
  • Toys
  • Books, DVDs, CD's
  • Housewares, dishes, pots and pans, utensils
  • Dressers, desks, bookshelves
  • Novelty items or “antique-type” items (door knobs, milk cans, etc.)
  • Memorabilia and collectibles
  • Bicycles

We do not accept the following programs at the Reuse Centre:

  • Couches and large chairs
  • Mattresses
  • Any item with an electrical cord
  • Items containing freon
  • Clothing, footwear
  • Linens, blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, etc.
  • Auto parts, tires, batteries or automotive accessories
  • Potentially unsanitary items (toilets, etc.)
  • Bulky items

Bulky/Hard Plastics

This seasonal program is currently available at all Transfer Station Sites. 

We accept the following bulky/hard plastic items for recycling:

All coloured plastic containers with HDPE (SPI Code #2), Polypropylene (SPI Code #5) or LDPE (SPI Code #4). The item must be greater than 10 liters or 10 kilograms capacity (2.5 gallon) and up to and including a 95-gallon recycling bin. This includes:

  • clean plastic pails/buckets
  • crates
  • clean plastic drums
  • storage containers
  • empty garbage cans
  • recycling bins
  • totes/bins
  • laundry baskets
  • large flower pots (less than 5% dirt)

If an item is not specified, please contact Public Works

Plastics such as PET, MRP, and Film. This includes items such as:

  • plastic toys
  • plastic lawn furniture
  • hangers
  • empty gas cans
  • paddle boats
  • coolers
