Tax Rebates and Incentive Programs

There are a variety of property tax rebates and incentive programs available to those who own property in the Municipality of Trent Lakes. Review each of the rebate and incentive programs an learn how to apply. 

Application for reduction

Was a building on your property demolished or damaged by fire? You may qualify for a property tax reduction by submitting a Section 357 and 358 application.

The deadline for applications is February 28 of the current year for the preceding taxation year.

Application for low-income seniors and low-income disabilities

The County of Peterborough provides tax relief for Low-income Seniors and Low-income Persons with Disabilities. This program grants eligible seniors and disabled property owners up to $200.

The annual deadline to apply for this program is November 15. Successful applicants will receive a credit applied to future tax installments. The Municipality does not issue refunds for this program. If you are on a monthly pre-authorized payment plan, the credit will be applied towards your next withdrawal payment.

Farmland property tax reduction

Visit Agricorp to find out if you're eligible for the Farm Tax Program. Through this program, your farmland is taxed at no more than 25% of the residential property tax rate. Your farm residence and one acre of land surrounding it continue to be taxed at the residential tax rate. If you wish to be placed back in the Farmland Property Class, you must be properly registered with Agricorp.

Assessment documents from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) should be checked carefully. Properties that are being farmed should be in the Farmland Property Class.

Managed forest tax incentive program

Visit the Province of Ontario to find out if you're eligible for the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP). If yes, your property will be classified as ‘Managed Forest' and taxed at no more than 25% of the residential property tax rate.

To participate, you must:

  • Prepare and follow a 10-year Managed Forest Plan
  • Submit a 5 year progress report and update your management plan every 10 years to stay in the program

Conservation land tax incentives

The Conservation Land Tax Incentive Program recognizes, Ontario's provincially important natural areas. Portions of your property that have eligible natural heritage features may qualify for a 100% property tax exemption. Visit the Province of Ontario's website for more information.

Charity tax rebate program

The County of Peterborough provides eligible charities with a rebate of their property taxes.
