Short Term Rentals - Program Update

In March 2022, the Municipality of Trent Lakes approved a three year phased program to recognize and address the emergence of Short-Term Rental properties. A Short-Term Rental Group, composed of staff and members of Council was created to implement the program.

What has happened so far?

2022

• Reviewed existing by-laws, current by-law enforcement processes and practices.
• Reviewed call centre processes and reporting.
• Explored other after hours by-law enforcement options.
• Tracked and reported on Short-Term Rental complaints.

2023

• Implemented an Administrative Monetary Penalty (AMP) system for non-parking offences.
• Introduced a comprehensive new nuisance by-law.

2024

• Created a draft Short-Term Rental Accommodation Licensing By-law.
• Presented draft By-law to Council on April 16, 2024.
• Accepted public input through online form (160 submissions).
• Held two Special Council Meetings to inform the public and gather input (50 delegations).

What is happening now?

The Working Group is continuing to consider all of the public input received, including any recommended changes in dealing with Short Term Rentals, and required resources for any recommended options.

The Short Term Rental Working Group will present an updated report to Council for consideration at the November 5, 2024 meeting, which will include potential options moving forward and the recommendation from the Working Group for Council consideration.
