The Peterborough Humane Society has been contracted by the Municipality of Trent Lakes to provide animal control and pound services.
If you encounter a loose dog in your neighbourhood, you should first contain the dog and put a leash on it if it is safe to do so, and call the Peterborough Humane Society. How to report issues:
If you own a dog in the Municipality of Trent Lakes, you are required to purchase a life time dog tag for each dog. You can buy a dog tag by completing the Dog Tag Application or by visiting:
You need to renew each dog tag annually at the Municipal Office. The dog tag will only remain valid as long as the annual renewal fee is paid. We will send you a reminder to renew your tag each year.
Please review By-Law B2023-064 to amend B2018-079, Lifetime Dog Tags.
The following dog tag fees apply:
We'll make every attempt to locate an owner and return a lost dog to its home. To help us with this process, please ensure that all identification tags are kept up to date. Remember, a dog must be licensed and you will be considered liable.
According to B2023-064 Licensing of Dogs and Kennel Operations, anyone who has more than three dogs over the age of three months, at one location, must obtain a kennel licence. This does not include a veterinary clinic or hospital under the care of a licensed veterinarian.
Please contact the By-Law department to apply for a Kennel Licence.
You must pick up after your dog when they go to the washroom on municipal or private property. You must not leave without picking up the waste.
